National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts (NACTA), as the founder of the higher education system of Chinese traditional theatre, is now the leading institution in higher education of Chinese traditional theatre in China. It has the most disciplines in Chinese traditional theatre education, the most developed system of training methods, and a great number of excellent teaching staff. During the last decades, NACTA has educated the greatest number of talents in Chinese traditional theatre art, and had accumulated a great reputation in the society.

Founded in 1950, National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts is the only autonomous institution in Chinese traditional theatre's training and research in China and the only institution of its kind in China that offers both BA and MA degrees. Currently there are 2,500 students and 250 experienced faculty members. Since the 1950s, among 6000 graduates most of them are engaged in Chinese dramatic troupes, media arts, filmmaking industry as well as theatrical education and criticism circle, and more than 70% of the actors and actresses on the stage of Chinese traditional theatre, especially Peking Opera, are graduates from NACTA. 

Located in the southwest of Beijing, NACTA has a campus of 53,000 square-meters and is equipped with modern theaters, film studios, recording studios, multimedia classrooms, rehearsal halls, libraries, student dorms, gyms, and cafeterias. At NACTA there are 23 majors in 6 departments: Department of Performing Art, Department of Directing, Department of Music, Department of Dramatic Literature, Department of Stage Design, and Department of New Media Art. It also has a Graduate School, a School for Continuing Education, and a middle school affiliated to the Academy.  

NACTA attaches great importance to international exchange. In the past decades, it has established friendly relationships with many comprehensive universities and art academies from the USA, Canada, the UK, France, Korea and Japan, etc. More than 300 overseas students from different continents have come to the Academy to further their studies in Chinese culture and Xiqu (Chinese traditional theatre) performing arts.  Meanwhile, some teachers and students from the Academy are invited to perform and attend international art festivals in other countries as well. NACTA warmly welcomes visitors, exchange scholars and overseas students from all over the world.
