ATEC 3rd International Forum Held at CAD


ATEC 3rd International Forum was held from May 18 to 21, 2008, at the Central Academy of Drama, China (CAD). The event was co-held by ATEC and the Department of Physical Health and Arts Education of the Ministry of Education of PRC, organized by CAD, and supported by China Institute of Stage Design. The theme of this forum is “Practice and Training on Stage Design Training”.

During the Directors’ Meeting, the application by National School of Drama (India) and National Institute of Dramatic Art (Australia) were approved by unanimous vote, and thus the two schools became official members of ATEC according to the Bylaws of ATEC.



On the afternoon of May 18, several distinguished guests delivered speeches and expressed their congratulations on the opening of the event, along with their wish that the communication among the experts and scholars would accelerate the development of Asian theatre education. They were Director Yang Guiren of the Department of Physical Health and Arts Education of the Ministry of Education of PRC, President Michael Ramsaur of OISTAT (also a professor at Stanford University), Secretary-General Ji Guoping of China Theatre Association, President Cai Tiliang of China Institute of Stage Design, and ATEC Director-General Xu Xiang (also the president of CAD).

From May 19 to 21, experts and scholars from 23 art schools attended the seminars under the forum, which included CAD, Nihon University College of Arts (Japan), Chung-Ang University (Korea), Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore), National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts (China), Shanghai Theatre Academy (China), the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (China), National School of Drama (India), etc. The seminars focused on 3 main topics: "Where Is the Contemporary Stage Design Going and What Are the Best Ways to Teach?”, “Achievements Made in the Field of Stage Design Training and Issues to Be Addressed” and “Study on Pedagogical Methods of Stage Design”. During the 3 days, students from the CAD (China), National School of Drama (India), Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore) and a theatre centre from Bangladesh presented four plays, namely Prince De Ling and Empress Dowager Ci Xi, Chitrapat Ramayan, Bhelua Sundari, and Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral.
