Director’s Notes

This is the maiden work of BAYARSAIHAN, a journalist from Mongolian Central Broadcasting Station. Twenty years ago on the train from Ulan Bator to Edenton, I read this play three times without stop in a faint light. It was so gripping that at that night I felt myself entering into the soul of each character to experience what they experience in a sea of love and hate. There seemed two minds in my body contradicting each other. I was too excited to sleep a wink. It was in that year when the play was staged at Mongolia National Theatre.

As a director, I had been looking for an opportunity to stage this play. I didn't have a chance until last year when I finally co-created this play with the new generation of Mongolian theatre artists.

This play shows the inseparable connection between man and nature by expressing how the true feelings hidden deep down inside contradict with the reality. Such connection is mysterious and may affect in a sense our whole life. It declares that nature is the mother of humankind and we shall not owe our mother any ill intention, or there will be a consequence....

The cast in Deer and Man are junior students of our Academy. As their teacher and also a director, I do appreciate their talents. Apart from directing and play writing, stage design, lighting design, sound effect as well as composition are all independently accomplished by these students. They have made every effort to portray and interpret each character. All in all, to present a great performance, there must be great audiences! May you enjoy this play! Thank you!

Synopsis

A new couple spends their honeymoon in an uninhabited mountain where they want to have a free and sweet holiday. To celebrate their visit to this forest, the husband hunts a deerlet.

At the moment, a man who was shot suddenly appears and dies right before them. And the husband finds this dead man is the ex-husband of his wife. And the bullet in the dead body is the one he shot when hunting the deer.

A holiday that should have been enjoyable instead becomes a suffering and many bygones come back to their mind and make them displeased. Contradictions grow in intensity.

They, however, end up forgiving each other and decide to bury the body hiding this from everyone. Can they do that?
