Director’s Notes
Everyone has his own small inner universe; and the nature of the universe is "life". The life here does not simply mean eating, drinking and breathing, but the reason for the human beings as they are human beings, which is that everyone has certain characteristics with dreams, love, sacrifice, challenge, patience, gratitude and so on. These unique natures of human beings with which we were once familiar, however, are gradually forgotten. It is needless to explain what the external factors are because the more important reason is that our perceptions are becoming more and more numb.
It is urgent to wake up people's natures now. There was once a Chinese story talking about a baby lion who was used to live together with sheep. It seemed that he considered himself as a sheep till one night when his mother found him and uttered a loud howl nearby. He was at once stimulated by his mother's signal and become excited. After breaking the fence, he finally went back to live together with his mother. Alike the baby lion in this story, we also need a kind of "lion's roar” so as to arouse our natures.
The Dream of Sancho is a modern fable about how Sancho is seeking for his natures. As the role of Sancho, he is an imagined character based on modern people's natures. I hope that you don't focus on the delicate languages in the works, as they are metaphors of “the lion roar " and the core purpose of this production is to awaken people's natures .The plot is not easily analysable either . Although this play is not enough mature, I still hope it can help people find their inner universe and arouse it.
Synopsis
The Dream of Sancho (written and directed by Kyung Sung Lee) is the third performance of Creative VaQi which has shown us sensational pieces like Invitation and silence. It tries to break down the wall between verbal and non-verbal performance by harmonizing various genre of art like media, installation art, and modern dance.
One night, a modern man who completely lost Don Quixote's wildness fells in sleep in his office. In his dream, the old fellow of Don Quixote Sancho comes to him from Lamancha. Then fantastic miracle and magic things start to happen around him whom never recognizes the old fellow Sancho. Indeed, Sancho can make him recover the lost nature as human and as Don Quixote?
This story, motivated from the noble of Cervantes is a modern myth and a poem showing us how human recovers the original ego.
This is a fantastic outdoor performance in a summer night, using objet like umbrella, movement of the actors and media. It pursue the harmony of human, environment and technology. Come and see this Digilog performance crossing the reality and dream, made by various Korean young artists.
